In 1968, the Hendersons had exhausted all options for educating their son, Britt, and approached their church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, to start a school for students who learn differently. Church administrators, educators, parents, and community leaders came together to develop an innovative learning program and to start Westminster School of Nashville.

“It is so rewarding to see what this has grown into – from our church on West End Avenue educating seven children,” said Mrs. Henderson.

Throughout the years, the Hendersons remained involved with Westminster School, establishing the Britt Henderson Endowed Scholarship Fund in 1989 in memory of their son. In 2002, when Westminster School became Currey Ingram Academy and moved to the new Murray Lane location, Mrs. Henderson spoke at the dedication of the Henderson Memorial Bridge, tying the past and the future together.

“It’s a joy every time I come out to Currey Ingram Academy. I am so grateful to know that Britt’s life has such meaning forever.”

The Henderson Memorial Golf Tournament

In 2005, the Hendersons established the annual Henderson Memorial Golf Tournament with proceeds benefitting the scholarship fund so more students could benefit from a Currey Ingram education.

To continue to support Currey Ingram Academy into its future, Mrs. Henderson became a member of the Legacy Society by including the school in her estate plans. “Currey Ingram is at the top of my list. Education is important to us. I could see the product of what this school has accomplished.”

Indeed. She shared a story from a few years ago when she and her family were traveling to Florida. As they waited to board the flight, a young girl approached Mrs. Henderson’s son-in-law, who had his arm in a sling due to an injury. “The little girl was so concerned about him.” On the flight, the little girl and the son-in-law found themselves sitting across the aisle from one another and their conversation continued.

Mrs. Henderson learned that this empathetic girl was a student at Currey Ingram Academy. “I lost it. Here was a tangible reason for our school. Her parents were so appreciative of Currey Ingram and how the school has helped their daughter.”

To Mrs. Henderson, every child can benefit from Currey Ingram’s educational model, praising the school’s individualized learning plans for every student, small classes, exceptionally trained teachers, and endless opportunities for students.

“It’s a joy every time I come out to Currey Ingram Academy. I am so grateful to know that Britt’s life has such meaning forever.”
